2205 is a representative steel grade of duplex stainless steel. It accounts for almost 80% of all duplex steels. The most famous commercial grade of 2205 is SAF 2205 produced by Sandvik, Sweden. SAF is the abbreviation of Sandvik Austenite Ferrite. Other well-known manufacturers include Outokumpu, ATI, Industry and so on.
The “duplex” of duplex stainless steel refers to having both austenite and ferrite microstructures. In duplex stainless steels, the ferrite and austenite phases are approximately equal. Due to this special metallographic structure, duplex stainless steel has the characteristics of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steel, and its performance is more excellent.
From the point of view of chemical composition, 2205 can be regarded as increasing Cr content and reducing Ni content on the basis of austenitic 316L grade, and fine-tuning other components. Compared with 316L, the strength and corrosion resistance of 2205 are greatly improved.
In terms of strength, the yield strength of 2205 is about twice that of 316L. Due to this higher strength, the allowable stress of 2205 can be much higher. Therefore, in the same application scenario, such as steel pipes, the use of 2205 can reduce the wall thickness, reduce weight, and achieve cost savings. At the same time, 2205 is also a nickel-saving steel grade.
