3d Printing Metal Powder Technology

Bodycote, a UK provider of heat treatment and specialist heat treatment services, has released Powdermet, an additive manufacturing process that uses powder metallurgy to produce complex parts.

British company Bodycote can be said to have many years of experience in manufacturing high-strength, complex parts from metal powder. With the launch of Powdermet, it will soon be able to add to the experience of next-generation metal 3D printing.

According to the company, its new Powdermet technology uses a new patent-pending technology that combines 3D printing with proven near-net-shape technology.
Powdermet consists of four separate processes: Powdermet Mixing and 3D Printing, Powdermet 3D Printing, Powdermet Near Net Shaping (NNS) and Powdermet Selective Surface Near Net Shaping (SSNS).

Perhaps the most interesting technology is the hybrid with the 3D printing process, which combines NNS or SSNS with 3D printing to produce fully bonded parts at “significantly reduced cost and production time” compared to “3D printing”. The hybrid process also allows the use of multi-metal structures.

While some details have been provided about how these new processes work, Bodycote says the Powdermet suite of services has some significant advantages. These include complete powder consolidation, structural uniformity, and elimination of internal porosity and unconsolidated powder defects.

These methods can also produce parts with varying surface characteristics and thicknesses, with higher structural integrity than alternative production techniques, cutting the need to braze or weld parts together to form larger structures.

Different parts of the part can be formed from different alloys to achieve “the ideal and most cost-effective solution,” Bodycote said. Part designs can be tailored to actual performance requirements and are not limited by subsequent machining operations.

Stephen Harris, CEO of Bodycote Group, commented: “The recent breakthroughs are truly game-changing technologies in part design and manufacturing. “There is a wide range of industry applications, with early applications in aerospace, oil and gas, Power generation and mining. “

Materials available for Powdermet include Stainless Steel (304L, 316L, 316LN), Martensitic Stainless Steel (17/4PH, 13/8PH, 15/5PH, X4CrNiMo), Duplex Stainless Steel (Duplex 2205, Super Duplex 2505), Ni Base alloys (grades IN625, IN690, IN713, IN718, IN728, IN925, IN939, C22, 247LC, Supermet 60+, Supermet 60, Supermet 50, Waspaloy), Co base alloys (grades stellite1, 3, 6, 12 and 21 ), titanium (grade CP Ti, Ti6Al4V, TiAl, Ti6Al2Sn4Zr2Mo), aluminum (Al-Si alloy, Al6061, AlSi10Mg), cobalt chromium molybdenum and tungsten alloy.
