Nickel Alloys for marine scrubber

Nickel Alloys for marine scrubber  (marketing department of Shanghai HY Industry Co., Ltd)

Due to changes in environmental regulations issued by the International Maritime Organization (IMO), the demand for nickel-containing materials is expected to grow significantly. These new limits (IMO2020), which reduce the current sulphur cap from 3.50wt% to 0.50wt%, aim to further reduce sulphur oxides (SOx) emissions from ship exhaust and will come into effect from 1 January 2020.
Sulphur Emission Control Areas (SECAs) have been established in the Baltic Sea, North Sea, North America (including designated coastal areas of the United States and Canada) and the United States Caribbean (Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands), and as of January 1, 2015, emissions The lower limit is 0.10 wt %. These initiatives took shape in 1997, when the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) established Annex VI, the Regulations for the Prevention of Air Pollution from Ships. Currently, IMO2020 applies to ships operating outside designated Emission Control Areas (ECAs), with the goal of continuing to improve the health and environmental benefits of people living near ports and coastal areas.

The road to compliance ( Nickel Alloys for marine scrubber )

The global marine industry’s demand for high-sulphur fuel oil, also known as “bunker fuel”, has remained at around 4 million barrels per day. This cheap fuel has made the world’s competitive maritime trade more economical.
With the implementation deadline fast approaching, options to comply with the IMO2020 rules include switching to higher-priced low-sulfur fuels or retrofitting exhaust gas scrubber systems. In the scrubber scheme, ships can continue to use high-sulfur fuel oil, which is inexpensive and less affected by fuel price fluctuations, so this scheme is ideal for the marine industry. Especially for ultra-heavy vessels, the cost of installing marine scrubbers is low and the return on investment is quicker, allowing ships to line up containers to get the job done and avoid huge fines. At present, there is a large demand for ship modification, so that material suppliers, equipment suppliers and facilities that can carry out the modification have played their role.

Nickel is durable in harsh environments ( Nickel Alloys for marine scrubber )

Two types of wet scrubber technologies have been developed: “open loop” and “closed loop”. In many cases, they are combined into a hybrid system, whereby the most appropriate technology is used according to the marine environment. The internal environment of the scrubber is very harsh, and the high temperature acidic chloride solution requires the use of nickel-containing materials with extremely high corrosion resistance, such as: 2205 (UNS S32205), alloy 31 (N08031) and alloy 59 (N06059).
In wet marine scrubbers, sulfur oxides (SOx) in the exhaust gas react with the water flow as it passes through to produce sulfuric acid, which is removed from the exhaust gas before it is removed from the exhaust system. The remaining sulfuric acid is extremely corrosive, but can also be neutralized when diluted with sufficient alkaline seawater. The wash water can be discharged to the open sea after being treated in a separator to remove silt. “Open loop” scrubbers use the natural alkalinity of seawater for neutralization, while “closed loop” scrubbers require the addition of an alkaline solution (usually sodium hydroxide) for neutralization.

Sea areas with low natural alkalinity require “closed loop” scrubbers. After cleaning, the waste liquid can be safely discharged into the water body without harming the environment. When operating in a zero-discharge zone, the waste liquid is funneled into a collection tank for planned periodic discharge. Marine scrubbers will become part of engine management and are critical to the safe operation of ships. If marine scrubbers fail to work, ship owners risk penalties, reputational damage and environmental damage.
The new rules aim to significantly improve air quality in densely populated coastal and port areas, preventing pollution-related premature deaths, asthma and regional acid rain. Marine industry is adopting scrubbing options to meet new environmental regulations
