HASTELLOY B-3

Characteristics of HASTELLOY B-3 alloy with special resistance to hydrochloric acid

  • HASTELLOY B-3HASTELLOY B-3 alloy is a new member of the nickel-molybdenum alloy family, one of the HASTELLOY series, and has excellent resistance to hydrochloric acid at any temperature and concentration. It also has good corrosion resistance to sulfuric acid, acetic acid, anthranilic acid, phosphoric acid and other non-oxidizing media.

  • HASTELLOY B-3 alloy has high resistance to pitting corrosion, stress corrosion cracking, knife-like corrosion and corrosion in the heat affected zone of welding.

Executive Standard:

  • ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code

  • ASME has published Specification Example 2140 for the solid solution annealed HASTELLOY B-3 alloy (UNS N10675, 2.4600).

  • This alloy is also listed in ASTM standards under Technical Conditions B333 (thick plate, thin plate, strip), B335 (bar), B366 (welded fittings), B564 (forgings), B619 (welded pipe), B622 (seamless pipe) and B626 (small diameter welded pipe).

Processing and manufacturing:

  • ERNIMO-10 for HASTELLOY B-3As a result of improvements, the thermal stability of B-3 alloy has been significantly improved, minimizing the problems associated with the machining of previous B series alloy components. This is due to the fact that in B-3 alloy there is little tendency for the formation of harmful intermetallic phases, making it more ductile during heating and subsequent thermal cycling of various forms.

  • HASTELLOY B-3 alloy is a low carbon alloy, and grain size control can be achieved by controlling the final forging temperature. When heated at 1230°C, forging and other thermal processes can be performed if there is sufficient time for the part to be generally uniformly heated.

  • HASTELLOY B-3 alloy can also be shaped by cold working, and although work hardening occurs more rapidly, all conventional cold working techniques are applicable to it.

  • Tests have shown that the resistance to uniform corrosion of HASTELLOY B-3 alloy in boiling hydrochloric acid at a concentration of 20%, when the cold compression deformation is not greater than 50%, is not reduced compared to its resistance in solution heat treatment.

  • HASTELLOY B-3 alloy can be welded by all common welding methods, but special attention should be paid to certain precautions taken during welding to prevent excessive heat input.

  • HASTELLOY B-3 is generally welded with the ERNIMO-10 package.

Heat treatment:

  • Unless specifically requested by the customer, all HASTELLOY B-3 alloy forgings are supplied in solution heat treated condition.

  • The temperature of B-3 alloy is 1065°C followed by rapid quenching and cooling. Sheet or wire is bright annealed at a heating temperature of 1150°C followed by cooling in hydrogen.

Applications:

  • HASTELLOY B-3 alloy can be used for all applications of the previous B-2 alloy. As with alloy B-2,  B-3 is not recommended for use in environments where trivalent iron salts and divalent copper salts are present, as these salts can quickly cause corrosion damage.

  • When hydrochloric acid comes into contact with iron and copper, it chemically reacts with them to form trivalent iron and divalent copper salts.
