Electron beam selective melting forming technology (EBSM) is a metal additive manufacturing technology based on a digital model file that uses a high-energy electron beam as a heat source to melt metal powder into three-dimensional solid parts in a vacuum environment. The principle is as follows:

PREP processPREP 3D printingThe metal parts formed by EBSM technology have good internal quality, fast forming speed and small residual stress, and have been widely used in orthopedic medical, aerospace and other fields. However, the quality of the formed part depends largely on the forming process and the metal powder. The EBSM technology uses a relatively coarse alloy powder particle size, typically concentrated at 45-105 μm.

At present, most of the powders for electron beam metal printing are mainly vacuum gas atomization, and the powder has disadvantages such as non-metallic ceramic inclusions, hollow powder, and satellite balls. Plasma Rotating Electrode Process (PREP) is a spherical powder preparation process. The principle is as shown in the figure below.

The consumable electrode is made of metal or alloy. The end surface is heated by the plasma arc and melted into a liquid. The liquid is thrown and pulverized by the centrifugal force of the high-speed rotation of the electrode, and spheroidized under the surface tension. A powder is formed.
